Rail freight transport is a mainstay of the European transport market. Energy-efficient, high-volume and a safe means of transport, rail represents an ideal instrument for attaining climate targets. To achieve this, rail freight must achieve a much greater share of the market. As part of the Rail Freight Transport Master Plan, comprehensive modernisation is an important mechanism for increasing rail freight.
In that context, digitalisation provides an opportunity to significantly raise productivity and quality. It concerns economic efficiency, every business process in sales and performance and the optimisation of multimodal logistics and transport chains.
Where do we currently stand with digitalisation? What tasks lie ahead for this sector from a scientific standpoint? What are companies undertaking? What are rail freight industry customers’ needs? Are the overall conditions right?
