The challenges Germany’s cities and local municipalities face in order to meet transport climate targets are considerable. The Federal Administrative Court’s ruling that paved the way for vehicle bans sparked a nationwide debate about the right measures in order to quickly ensure more climate-friendly urban transport in the longer term. From a political perspective electric buses in public transport play an important role. However, despite the transport companies’ latest efforts to put electric buses into service, their nationwide use is still a long way away. Whereas in some other European cities electric buses are already in widespread use, in Germany their numbers are still rising slowly. Why is that? And how can policymakers, transport companies and manufacturers be convinced to help electric buses finally achieve a breakthrough in Germany’s public transport systems?
