In its Communication “A Digital Single Market Strategy for Europe”, the European Commission highlights that digitalisation can significantly improve transport and traffic management, with positive economic effects.
The European Rail sector through the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), aims to harmonise the automatic train control and communication system. The full deployment of ERTMS is providing the backbone for a digital, connected Single European Rail Area, having a significant value impact in the Traffic Management Systems in Europe and worldwide.
The industry has been actively involved in the last years in the development of the future evolution of ERTMS, especially concerning Automatic Train Operation (ATO), Hybrid Level 3 which can deliver better capacity and increase reliability in comparison with ERTMS Level 2 and Cyber Security with the strengthen the level of protection against any significant threat to the signalling and telecom systems.
